*The Fresh Prince of Bel Air *is one of the most iconic sitcoms of the 90s, seeing Will Smith goofing around with Carlton, getting told off by Uncle Phil or getting up to mischief with Jazzy Jeff was the highlight of many of our childhoods.
Now, the show might be getting a reboot as the production company that owns the rights to the show has filed some trademark applications for ‘Fresh Princess’ across television and merchandise, according to a TMZ exclusive.
Reboots and remakes are everywhere at the moment from Sabrina The Teenage Witch to Gilmore Girls, is it because we’re obsessed with nostalgia at the moment, or have production companies run out of good ideas?
The news has us thinking about who we’d like to see as the female lead of the show, it’s the perfect chance to showcase some of the incredible young women of colour in acting.
All the people we want to play the Fresh Princess
Amandla Stenberg
The Fresh Prince was supposed to have just finished high school when the show started, so the character is around 17-years-old, Will Smith however was 21 at the time the show started, so 19-year-old Amandla Stenberg could be the perfect fit age-wise. She's known for her roles as Rue in The Hunger Games and Madeline Whittier in Everything, Everything.
Letitia Wright
Wright brought the perfect balance of comedy and emotion to her role as T'Challa's younger sister in Black Panther, and whoever plays the Fresh Princess will need to have comedic timing in her arsenal to nail the role.
Zendaya
21-year-old Zendaya has been acting, dancing and singing since childhood, and is known for her roles in Disney's Shake It Up and more recently as Anne Wheeler in the musical drama film The Greatest Showman.
Willow Smith
An obvious choice since we're talking about Will Smith, but Willow could bring the kind of kooky energy this show needs to bring it up to date. Willow has starred in I Am Legend and more recently American-Japanese anime series Neo Yokio.
Storm Reid
She's just 14 but is about to be a huge name in Hollywood as she stars in A Wrinkle In Time alongside Oprah and Reese Witherspoon – and who knows how long the Fresh Prince reboot will take to put together?
Yara Shahidi
So good that she has her own Black-ish spin off show, Shahidi has also starred in Wizards of Waverly Place, Scandal (as an adorable young Olivia Pope) and as the lead in Grown-ish.
Skai Jackson
She's only 15 but has proved she has a winning sense of humour by clapping back at trolls on social media, and has starred in Ultimate Spider-Man, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Bunk'd.
Paige Hurd
Best known for her role as Tasha Clarkson in Chris Rock's Everybody Hates Chris, the 25-year-old has also been in ER, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Beauty Shop.
Quvenzhané Wallis
The 14-year-old was a massive hit in the reboot of Annie, and she's also been in 12 Years a Slave, *Beasts of the Southern Wild *and Beyonce's visual album Lemonade.
Lovie Simone
She provides much-needed comedic relief with her cheeky character Zora in Netflix series Greenleaf, and played Jasmin in Orange Is The New Black. Could she bring that same energy to the Fresh Princess?
