If you are still missing the White Lotus shaped hole in your TV schedule, then you might have found solace in Netflix's' The Four Seasons - and if you haven't, we'd highly recommend checking it out!
The comedy centres around six friends and the quarterly holidays they embark on - with the dynamics of the group thrown into question when they discover one couple is about to split up. The show, made by Tina Fey, is actually based on the 1981 romcom of the same name by Alan Alda, although the script has some significant changes from this version. In fact, Alda appeared as a special guest in the Netflix version.
The show had a star-studded cast, which included Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Will Forte and Kerri Kenney-Silver. It was a huge success, amassing a staggering 12 million views within its first week of release, thanks to its hilarious and heartwarming portrayal of the complexities of midlife friendships.
With the series ending on a huge cliff hanger, it's got everyone wondering if The Four Seasons will be coming back for a second series...
Will there be a series two of The Four Seasons?
At the moment, a second series of The Four Seasons hasn't been confirmed. However, the show's co-creators Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield have dropped some hints they'd love to see The Four Seasons return.
'I feel like we sort of don’t dare to dream yet. But we did. Who knows. If we were lucky enough to do more of these, we’d certainly all like to hang out again,' Fey said in an interview with TV Guide.
The show was originally billed as a 'limited series.' However, that's not to say there aren't more ideas in the pipeline. 'I feel like we saw it both ways. It could be a great limited series, but we have ideas if it goes on,' Fisher told The Hollywood Reporter. 'It’s a question of whether we can get the whole cast back, and we want to see what these guys would do next. I don’t think we would do it ever as an anthology. I think you want to see these particular characters.'
What will happen in series two of The Four Seasons?
Spoilers ahead!
Although a second run of the show hasn't been confirmed, Fey dropped a hint that she would like to see Ginny and Anne's family explored. If you need a reminder, Ginny is the younger new girlfriend of Nick, who he brings on holiday after he decides to leave his marriage with Anne. The group settles into the swing of navigating this new dynamic, with plenty of tension along the way. However, the bombshell comes when, following an argument with Ginny, Nick dies in a car accident. After his funeral, we learn that Ginny is pregnant with his child.
'If we were lucky enough to do more, I think we would definitely explore that, because that kid would be coming into a family — that kid would be Julia Lester’s half-sister,' she told Variety. 'I mean, Alan did a beautiful job of writing the women characters in the movie, but now that we have more time, we’ve definitely all talked about wanting to spend a little more time with Anne and see where she goes after the divorce. Because, I mean, I _love_Sandy Dennis’ exit in the movie, saying like, "Fuck it. Tell Nick I bought a snake," but—they don’t stay friends with her! And that, sometimes in life, is how it goes.'
Is series one of The Four Seasons worth watching? The reviews are in...
If the reviews are anything to go by, then definitely! The Four Seasons topped Netflix's top 10 list and was watched by a total of 11.9 million households in its first four days on the platform.
The Guardian gave the show four stars, and said 'Part White Lotus without fatalities, part Gilmore Girls on HRT or Golden Girls with men, The Four Seasons is Fey and her writing and acting ensembles on fine form, everything informed by her rigorous intelligence, wit and experience. Rest your aching bones and enjoy.'
Meanwhile, The Radio Times said the show successfully managed to avoid comparisons to The White Lotus. 'Far from feeling like a lightweight tribute act, The Four Seasons is actually a welcome palate cleanser after a slow, uneasy and ultimately feel-bad stay at The White Lotus, approaching its material from an entirely different point of view,' they wrote.
