Fleabag Is Almost Over For Good. Which Of These Fan Theories About The Ending Sounds Right To You?

Here's how viewers think 25 remaining minutes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's dark comedy will wind up...

Fleabag ending fan theories

Updated on

As it’s been confirmed that Fleabag has one episode left before it ends, forever (there will be no third series we're afraid) we took a look at all the different ways it might turn out. Spoilers lurk below, though, so if you haven’t seen up to episode five of the second and final series ofFleabag, look away now (but then come back later to check which fan got it right!)

On the precipice of the last 25 minutes of Fleabag, Fleabag and the hot priest have finally had sex (or might still be having sex?), Claire and her colleague Klare have spent the evening out on his last night in the UK, while Claire’s nasty husband Martin, (who his son wants Claire to leave) is as cross at Fleabag as ever, and Fleabag might not have a legal leg to stand on now that the only lawyer willing to represent her has been shooed away in the dead of night with the promise that he’s the best sex ever, so that Fleabag can instead have sex with the hot priest.

All this, and, in the morning, Fleabag’s dad and step-mum are due to be married, with the hot priest officiating (after initially refusing to) and, because having a painting in a middle-class TV show is a bit like having a loaded gun in a less middle class series (once it's been presented, it has to do something) Fleabag and Claire’s portrait by their stepmother will reach completion.

And here’s what fans think is about to happen:

‘Something dark is definitely gonna happen, most likely involving the stepson. Why would PWB just throw in the random stepson creepily saying “tell her to leave him” for no reason?’ - mysteriouslemon, Reddit

‘She'll get bored of him. It was the thrill of the chase, he'll leave the church and follow her around like a puppy and she'll go off with the lawyer. ...7 times though…’ - judithsredcups, Reddit (who was later corrected that it was actually ‘9 times'

'Hopefully they don't end up together, neither is good for the other. The Priest is set to lose everything he worked for and the one stable thing in his life, and Fleabag is throwing herself into a relationship with someone who seems to be a borderline alcoholic with controlling tendencies because she's still not over her actions driving Boo to suicide.' - wrote Reddit user wetflame, to which another user, goodhella, replied:

‘Yeah, I don't see them riding off into the sunset together, either. Hopefully the priest will be the catalyst to the long-overdue catharsis of Fleabag coping with Boo's death, and therefore no longer needing to "disappear" to the audience…’

Over on Twitter we have these theories...

As for the best theory we’ve heard down the pub:

The priest does this a lot. He sleeps with women loads. He says he’s falling in love with Fleabag but in fact she’s falling for him.

He’s been a little bit emotionally manipulative throughout - telling her to ‘kneel’ right after she’s confessed her deepest darkest secrets, as if her vulnerability is an open invitation to his lust is one particular example - and we’ll find out, once and for all, because no-one in this show is ever a complete monster, that he is just the wrong side of decent.

The priest exactly who Fleabag used to be, and has not helped one bit in her getting over the death of her best mate Boo. Instead, Fleabag will come to realise that Claire played this role, and will also doubtless end up with Klare, as there needs to be a happy ever after somewhere along the line. The stepmother and the dad will marry, a little less happily, and the painting she’s done of Fleabag and Claire will be absolutely hideous.

As for the viewers, we’ll be disgruntled because the series is ending, and might take this anger out on the show’s ending, but, truly, Phoebe Waller-Bridge will have shown us a hugely valuable lesson - that we fell for the priest just as hard as Fleabag did, and that’s how easily it can be done. Not only will it be a commentary on gross men using their power to do gross things, it’ll be a big sidewards glance towards all the other TV shows that have romanticised dangerous men and the way they treat women like crap....it's just a theory, though!
