Like olive oil and ice cream, or watermelon and chilli crisp, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson are co-stars we wouldn't have thought to put together, but they make perfect sense. On hearing that the two actors are starring opposite each other in the upcoming comedy horror, Die, My Love, we found ourselves wondering why they hadn't been paired up before.
As former teen fantasy mainstays, with Lawrence playing Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and Pattinson playing Edward Cullen in Twilight, they are both familiar with global stardom. They are also familiar with knowing when to retreat from said stardom and have subsequently become meticulous about choosing which projects to work on.
Which is all the more reason to get excited about Die, My Love, the dark comedy horror film directed by Lynne Ramsay (We Need To Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here) and co-written by Irish playwright, Enda Walsh. It is an adaptation of the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz about a new mother in the French countryside who develops postpartum depression and enters psychosis.
What is Die, My Love about?
In Die, My Love, Lawrence plays the new mother, whose name is not yet known, with Pattinson playing her husband and LaKeith Stanfield playing her lover. Also in the cast are Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte.
In the novel, the woman is suffering a mental breakdown after having a child – finding herself isolated from those around her, craving freedom while feeling trapped at home, and longing to feel at peace with her family while dealing with increasingly erratic thoughts.
'Given surprising leeway by her family for her increasingly erratic behaviour, she nevertheless feels ever more stifled and repressed,' the summary reads. 'Motherhood, womanhood, the banality of love, the terrors of desire, the brutality of "another person carrying your heart forever": Die, My Love faces all this with a raw intensity. It’s not a question of if a breaking point will be reached, but rather when, and how violent a form will it take?'. The novel was a finalist for the Booker Prize in 2018.
