If you are an actor in one of the biggest movie franchises in the world, it’s natural - albeit tedious at times - for fans to want to know who you are dating. The stars of Harry Potter know this all too well, especially co-stars Emma Watsonand Tom Felton who have long swerved rumours that they once dated.
While Watson has previously admitted to having a childhood crush on Felton ‘for the first two movies’, she has now confirmed that nothing 'ever, ever, ever happened romantically.’ But that still doesn't mean that hopes of a Harry Potter romance have been dashed for fans.
It was during HBO’s eagerly anticipated, high budget Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Reunion: Return to Hogwarts, that the pair finally addressed their relationship dynamic.
Emma revealed that Tom had rejected her while they were young, mainly because he saw her as his 'little sister.' She then recalled the sweet moment her childhood crush developed, 'I walked into the room where we were having tutoring,' she said. 'The assignment that had been given was to draw what you thought God looked like, and Tom had drawn a girl with a backward cap on a skateboard. And I just don’t how to say it—I just fell in love with him.’
'I used to come in every day and look for his number on the call sheet, it was number seven, and if his name was on the call sheet, it was an extra exciting day,' she added.
Tom recalled, 'I think I was in the hair and make-up chair, and someone said something along the lines of, "Yeah, she had a crush on you,''' he said. 'I became very protective over her. Yeah, I’ve always had a soft spot for her and that continues to this day.'
'There’s always been something that’s like, I don’t know, a kinship,' he added.
So, while they both admit to having childhood crushes on each other, sadly for fans it looks like that's all it was. But as with all fandoms, there are still some looking for clues that there's more - though it looks like wishful thinking. Remember, men and women can be close friends...
Emma has been very open about her need for privacy in the past, especially within relationships. She told Vanity Fair back in 2017 that she has a rule to never talk about a boyfriend in an interview for her own privacy. In an interview with Glamour in 2012, she opened up about the struggle of dating in the public eye. She stated, '[Being famous is] difficult on my dating life, because anyone I get photographed with is automatically my boyfriend,' she said. 'So, it just makes it look as if I’ve had, like, 6,000 boyfriends.'
'I want to be consistent,' she said. 'I can’t talk about my boyfriend in an interview and then expect people not to take paparazzi pictures of me walking around outside my home. You can’t have it both ways.'
