Che Diaz has to be one of the most controversial characters the Sex And The City universe has ever seen. After each new episode of the reboot, And Just Like That, there’s consistently been a flurry of comments on Twitter dissecting their words and actions.
Episode nine was no different and this week viewers pulled up Che’s arguably problematic treatment of Miranda. The pair’s relationship (fling?) isn’t exactly off to a flying start as they can’t even seem to agree on what they are.
‘You’re not my girlfriend and we’re not dating,’ Che tells Miranda. ‘We’re not? What are we doing?!’ Miranda replies as she clutches a box of biscuits she brought over to her apartment—It was like watching a puppy being kicked.
There’s almost nothing more awkward than a ‘what are we?’ chat, especially when you realise you’re not on the same page. And Che is particularly riled up as they talk because Miranda has arrived at her apartment unannounced.
But viewers were quick to point out some double standards in this outrage: ‘So let me get this straight,’ wrote one viewer. ‘Che, who showed up at Carrie’s hospital AND apartment totally unannounced, is irked by Miranda surprising her at home with cookies? Narcissist!’.
This does seem like slight hypocrisy. Yet, you could sympathise with Che for their panic at relaxing fully into a romance with Miranda. Che undoubtedly must have felt ambushed when they discovered they weren't having casual sex with a woman in an open marriage but had, in fact, been the catalyst for a divorce.
When Che and Miranda have this disagreement in the stairwell of their apartment block, they come across as rude, blunt, and slightly unkind. But a narcissist? There hasn’t been enough evidence of that yet.
Narcissists are generally characterised as seeming entitled, acting superior to others, thinking people are jealous of them, not being empathetic, being manipulative, not paying attention to other’s needs, being aggressive, not being able to deal with feedback and being obsessed with success.
Che has a sprinkling of some of these traits. But what they and Miranda seem engulfed in, more than anything else, is confusion. One of the most important aspects of a new relationship (serious or otherwise) is establishing boundaries. And, at the moment, there’s a push and pull between Miranda and Che because neither of them understand or are satisfied by their arrangement.
The cure for this is communication. When both Miranda and Che are genuinely clear and honest about what they want, then we can judge Che on whether they’re being empathetic and considerate enough of Miranda’s needs and emotions.
