Missing your latest YA fiction cinematic fix? Don't even worry about it. The second film adaptation of James Dashner's Maze Runner series is out in cinemas today and it's a fine way to spend your weekend.
If you're not familiar with the stories, they're basically about a group of kids who find themselves in field surrounded by a huge maze filled with monsters. They've got no recollection of how they got there, who they are, or what the hell is going on. When we left the gang at the end of the last film, they'd escaped from the maze and were about to find out what had happened to the outside world.
Basically, it's gone to shit. (SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE FIRST FILM!) A disease has ravaged the world and turned the human race into zombie-like creatures called 'Cranks' that are super fast, super powerful and have a thirst for human flesh. The gang now need to come together to figure out what to do next, while struggling to understand who they can trust, and who they can't.
FYI, if you're a scaredy cat these films are actually really scary. Not like YA scary, like scary like I jumped in my seat and let out a little whimper at one point.
The films star Brit actors Kaya Scoderlario (Skins) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually, Nowhere Boy) and Americans Dylan O' Brien (Teen Wolf) and Ki Hong Lee (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt).
'Yeah, you do not want to mess with those guys says Ki Hong when we told him about the nightmares that the 'Cranks' had given us after watching the film. Kaya agrees; 'They had to go through 8 hours of make-up a day,' she says. 'The weird thing was they were all our stunt doubles who we know really well now. So it was really funny on that first day. Until they started chasing us that is.'
Did the cast pick up any skills from filming they could use in an actual apocalypse? 'Thomas and I are the two that would do the worst of the entire cast,' laughs Kaya. 'We would just sit down, drink a beer and die. We'd be like "Well if this is going to happen, let's go out in style."'
Ki Hong Lee and Dylan O'Brien had a different take though. '100% absolutely. Yeah. 100%' Says Dylan when I ask him if he'd survive an apocolyptic situation. 'I have a fallout shelter and everything. Stocked with crackers and water,' he jokes.
Watch the videos to find out what else they had to say.
