A Wife Swap Brexit Special Is Happening

Because watching other people's families fight over politics is way more fun than fighting with your own

Politics is always personal. Anyone who’s ever been to a family gathering will know they always start with your aunt asking ‘How are you?', progress to ‘How’s your love life?’ and end with a drunken rant backed up by stats from the Daily Mail.

Family feuds may end with tears, but they make excellent television. So we are ridiculously excited that Wife Swap is coming back to Channel 4 for a one-off episode later this year.

Here’s a little recap of Wife Swap, in case you’ve never seen it (aka you’ve been living under a rock for the past 10 years). There are two families from completely different backgrounds – one of them is usually too laid-back, the other is super up-tight. The wives then swap places for two weeks. All hell breaks loose.

The show ran for almost 6 years and broke our hearts when it was cancelled in 2009. But now it’s back for one night only, with a political twist.

The question that divided the nation will now split two households, as a wife who voted Remain switches families with one who voted for Brexit. It’s going to be explosive. Not only will there be the classic fights over the kids, but we can also expect a lot of tears and immigration fears.

Emily Jones, Commissioning Editor for Channel 4, has explainedwhy the programme is coming back. ‘Wife Swap was largely about how people chose to run their homes, but it always had political undertones. What better time to bring back this much loved format to explore Brexit and hear first-hand the conversations happening in every home.’

Now all we need is for Gogglebox to cover it.
