There’s nothing worse than falling out with your best mate. It’s inevitable, though. Weirdly enough we're all inclined to squabble with the people we care about, but for some reason, the blow always hits harder between friends than it does between significant others.
Maybe it's something to do with sex, or maybe it's something to do with the intricate dynamic between female friends that transgresses the bounds of the guy your boning. Either way, it's never nice when things are a bit off between you and your bestie. And if you're after a way to fix it, there is a film for that. There's nothing that a little bit of movie magic can't fix (or give you some romanticised inspiration for how to fix it yourself).
So, here's our pick of the best films about friends, to watch with your friends, if you happen to have fallen out with your friends. Wine and popcorn are compulsory.
1. Thelma And Louise
The OG besties. Thelma and Louise are the physical embodiments of the phrase 'ride or die'. If you need reminding of what true friendship looks like, it's right here, you guys. Let that be confirmation, a lesson to you or merely plant seeds of doubt about how far the two of you would really go for each other... all works out for the best in the end though, doesn't it?
2. Mean Girls
You saw this one coming, didn't ya? Mean Girls was probably a generation of young women's introduction to what it would look like to be a really, really shit friend. Unless your mate has got a burn book with your face in it hidden under her bed, you're probably okay.
3. Bridesmaids
Here we have one of the most magnificent of cinematic fall outs and an offering of some perspective on how bad whatever either of you did *really *was. As glorious as Annie's wedding shower tantrum was, until you've plunged your foot through a giant cookie with your best mate's name on, you can pretty much come back from anything. With or without the help of Wilson Philips.
4. The Heat
Opposites work, you guys. They really do. And while your mate's Melissa McCarthy-style instability might piss you off every now and again, and your Sandra Bullock-esque persistent planning of all. of. the. things. really grinds her gears, let's not forget what brought you together in the first place. A mutual appreciation for law enforcement and something to do with a lost cat...
5. The First Wives Club
Nothing can form a bond between women quite like the shared hatred for men, amirite galz? You'll struggle to find a better cinematic depiction of a female support system to base your life on. And if instead of kissing and making up you opt to dress in white and choreograph a dance routine to perform on your patio, then so be it.
6. Crossroads
CLASSIC. If this doesn't make you put the agg aside in favour of stealing a car and singing N'Sync, I don't know what will and you might as well call it quits. There's a little bit of Lucy, Kit and Mimi in all of us.
7. Clueless
Throwback to the days when 'you're a virgin who can't drive' was the harshest words to ever fall upon your teenage ears. Thank god for perspective, eh? Perspective is fun.
8. The Breakfast Club
A brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal walk into a library... and prove that literally, anyone can find common ground. Quite profound if you ask me.
9. Romy And Michele’s High School Reunion
There are few people who would attend your high school reunion with you wearing a matching, not-matching outfit. And you're gonna wanna hold on to that one.
10. Bride Wars
Finding out that your best friend is getting married is stressful on its own. It's hard to be excited straight away when you feel like you're about to lose your soulmate to some stranger they've been sleeping with for a little bit. But it's even harder when your weddings are on the same day and you want exactly the same thing. Any pre- or post- wedding drama going on with your bestie will be squashed by this pretty quickly.
11. Toy Story
Because there is no friendship like one between a toy cowboy and a toy space ranger and I'm not crying you're crying, okay?
