Some newbies, some oldies: these are some of our fave comedies on Netflix. Perfect for a rainy day (code: the next time you’re hungover and don’t have any OITNB left to watch.)
This is 40
OK, so you might not be 40 (quite yet) but that’s no reason not to fall in love with this movie from king of comedy Judd Apatow. Starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Grant as the world’s most relatable couple, this is the best laugh-a-minute for when you’re hungover – requiring zero brain power but makes lots of happy feelings. Mmmm.
Mermaids
Cher. Wynona Ryder. A young Christina Ricci. This is an all-star classic that tells the story of a mother and daughter who are totally different trying to navigate a super-complicated relationship (think Mum snogging same guy as daughter... yep, that kinda complicated.) Because, apparently, kids ‘don’t come with instructions.’ Oh, shit….
Tiny Furniture
The first feature film Lena Dunham made before she got all famous and stuff. Following a similar storyline and based in New York, this is like Hannah Horvath: The Prequel. It also stars Jemima Kirke and Lena’s little sis (soon to be starring in Girls, too.)
Frances Ha
If you’ve ever felt a bit hopeless, poor and totally unsure of what you’re doing with your life (who the hell hasn’t), you’ll understand the highs and lows of this story of Frances, a 27-year old dancer. Laugh, cry, share the pain and laugh some more.
Clueless
Couldn’t be left off this list, natch, and needs no introduction. Still our fave quote? ‘You’re a virgin, who can’t drive.’ Closely followed by ‘EW, as IF!’
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo. A classic comedy if ever we’ve seen one. This off-beat, adorably messed up film is the perfect combination of endearing and thought-provoking.
Frank
Frank Sidebottom (played by Michael Fassbender, although sadly in this film you can’t spend 136 minutes ogling his face because it’s hidden behind a big ol’ mask) is possibly the most unlikely rock star ever. He stars alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal and Bill from Harry Potter (aka the dashing Domhnall Gleeson). This is one of those sad but happy but dark but funny films that always leave our emotions a bit muddled. But it’s a great film nonetheless.
