SPOILER ALERT! Hands up who bawled their eyes out at the Bake Off semi final? You too? Jürgen, king of hearts, gone from the show too soon.
In a farewell note that left the nation ugly crying, lovely Jürgen wrote: 'Who wants to fly to the moon if you can be on Bake Off? It was such a fantastic ride. I have made 11 new friends and met the most amazing crew. Preparing all the recipes gave me confidence to experiment with flavours in sweet baking, to an extent I’ve never done before.'
'A huge thank you to all of you for all the kindness and warmth in your response and support. Lots of love, Jürgen.'
UGH. Farewell to the man who the television viewing public fell in love with for his cakes, his beautiful soul and well, basically everything about him.
As he left the tent, Jürgen was predictably gracious in defeat. 'I feel kind of okay,' he explained. 'I kind of saw it coming. I think the others are more shocked than I am. I really enjoyed being here. I made friends for life and I will be with them in spirit.'
He wrote on his Instagram account (which you should DEFINITELY check out as it will warm your heart): 'Thank you so much for all your support! Sad as it is to leave the tent at this point I am immensely proud on what I have achieved TOGETHER with all the other bakers! We helped each other where we could, and just had the best time ever! Congratulations to #starbaker @crystellepereira and to @thelatebloomeruk and @giuseppecooks for being in the final. Well deserved!'
Truly, German IT consultant Jürgen had us all besotted from the get go; when he won Star Baker in episode one and his family didn’t pick up the phone when he called to tell them the news - SOB.
He has a pet rabbit Humphrey who he watched last night’s show with. His fans are called Jürgenauts. He intricately piped a love song about Catherine of Aragon onto the side of a cake.
A 15th century trombone player (a sackbut, brass section fans) who sings Tudor songs written by Henry VIII to Paul and Prue (‘Passtyme With Good Companye’, ye olde worlde fans), all the while making super tasty creations? Get you someone who can do all three, and his name is Jürgen.
