The ‘It’s A Family Show’ Outcry Over Ant And Dec’s Drag Performance Is Simply Homophobia

The presenters looked incredible as Lady Antoinette and Miss Donna Lee, bringing drag to the most mainstream audience possible.

On Saturday night, TV gold happened - the winners of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and beloved presenting duo Ant and Dec created a one-of-a-kind supergroup. As part of the return of Saturday Night Takeaway, the pair decided to pull out all the stops by donning drag and joining series winners The Vivenne, Lawrence Chaney and Krystal Versace for a spectacular End Of The Show Show. (Ant and Dec's drag names? Inventively, the angels of the north named themselves Lady Antoinette and Miss Donna Lee.) Plus, the single they performed, We Werk Together, is raising money for The Trussell Trust, a charity dedicated to food banks.

The reaction to the fun stunt was mostly overwhelmingly positive. Drag might have become more mainstream in this country with the UK series of Drag Race, but Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway is pretty much the most biggest slot on TV you can get - and proves just loved it is in 2022. As writer Caitlin Moran tweeted, 'I had cheerfully thought "Oh, drag's gone mainstream," until I saw this, and thought of all the people who would be watching drag for the 1st time, on ITV prime-time, being done by two lads who would have been at school during Section 28 [laws across Britain that prohibited the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities], and it made me a bit tearful.'

People also praised the complete transformation of the Geordie pair, with their stunning make-up looks thanks to Ru Paul's Drag Race star Raven and Glow Up winner Ellis Atlantis. (Raven worked on Lady Antoinette, meanwhile Ellis glammed up Miss Donna Lee. Their hair was done by Curtis William.)

However, very sadly, there were some people who didn't see how important - and wonderful - the performance was. Just like when a woman wears a low-cut dress on primetime TV, there were some calls on Twitter that Ant and Dec shouldn't be in drag because 'it's a family show'. (Also, predictably, there were groups of straight men sharing the image on Twitter, making jokes like 'two pints' - cue our eyes rolling to the ceiling.) There have also been people on Facebook posting vomit emojis, and others hinting that Ant and Dec dressing in drag is a sign that 'PC culture' has gone too far, which is obviously a load of nonsense. (Sorry, but what's 'politically correct' about two men dressing up and having fun on TV?)

Personally, we couldn't think of anything more fun and accepting than the two most famous presenters in the country supporting the LBGTQ+ community - so saying, 'it's a family show' or 'the world's gone mad' is no more than adults using blatant excuses for their homophobia. Also, have these people ever taken their children to a pantomime?
