Anne Hathaway is poised to produce and star in a trad wife thriller, Yesteryear, per a report in Deadline.
Amazon MGM has acquired the rights to Caro Claire Burke's novel, which is of the same name, and plans to adapt Yesteryear for the screen.
Anne's new project could not feel more timely, with the intrigue surrounding trad wife culture snowballing. This is largely down to popular influencers such as Hannah Neeleman - known by her social media alias Ballerina Farm - tapping into what are perceived as trad wife behaviours, which typically include a focus on homemaking and supporting their partner. Or as some see it adhering to stereotypical gender roles and norms. Hannah and her husband Daniel - who have eight children - won internet fame with their videos of rural farm and family life in Utah, but came under scrutiny following a Sunday Times article which placed their purported idyllic lifestyle in doubt.
What is Yesteryear about?
Yesteryear plays right into the trad wife trend. It follows social media influencer Natalie, who has carved a career from sharing the ins and outs of her trad wife lifestyle with her 8 million followers. But the mum of six and wife of a cowboy then wakes up one day to find herself seemingly in the 19th century, forced to embrace the savage realities of the old-fashioned life she has been plugging online.
Deadline tease, 'Natalie was curating photos of homemade sourdough for her Instagram, she’s now expected to haul firewood and handwash clothes until her hands bleed. Has she become the unwitting star of a brutal reality show? Could it really be time travel? Is she being tested by God? By Satan? Already reckoning with forces beyond her control, when Natalie becomes pregnant with her new “husband’s” child, it quickly becomes apparent that it doesn’t matter how she got here — all that matters is how she gets out.'
It's unknown when Yesteryear will hit cinemas - some reports claim 2026 - but fans are already excited by the premise. As one commenter said on Reddit: 'Oh I hope this pulls no punches - this is a fantastic idea, especially in light of the Ballerina Farm article.'
