And Just Like That: Can We Give Steve A Break?

Did the writers really have to screw over Steve (again) in the latest episode?

Steve Miranda

Finally, my favourite character on Sex And The City{ =nofollow}, Steve, has made a reappearance in the reboot, And Just Like That. But sadly, even though I have been waiting to see his little glasses, and hear his Brooklyn accent, I can't help but feel disappointed every time he appears on screen. Because in AJLT, the writers have really screwed Steve over. And keep on continuing to do so.

Of course, the show focuses on the three (sorry Samantha) main women - but their partners, Big (RIP), Harry and Steve have been a complete oversight. Big might have died, but fictionally, you could argue he met a better fate than Steve, who has been written to be some sort of stereotypical boring old man (he's not that old!) and the source of Miranda's disdain, as she has an affair with Carrie's boss, Che Diaz.

Unfortunately, Steve has been absent for most of the last seven episodes (unless you count when Miranda has been complaining about her relationship to Charlotte and Carrie). But in the brief moments we have seen him on screen, he's been having difficulty with his hearing aid or, as in last night's episode, having difficulty to have sex with Miranda. It's as if the writers thought, hey, let's make this storyline even more humiliating for Steve, by showing not only is his wife cheating on him, but he's forgotten how to have sex.

As we've previously written here{ =nofollow}, from the moment Miranda and Che got it on, lovely, kind, considerate Steve deserved better.

Yes, OK, we know he technically cheated on Miranda in the first SATC film (though, to be honest, we don't treat that as canon SATC) - but two wrongs don't make a right. By cheating herself, Miranda is surely being massively hypocritical, as she had to be convinced by everyone else to take him back.

But apart from his huge indiscretion in the film - and despite her snappy moods and coldness - Steve has always been there for Miranda, willing to put the work in and make the effort. Yes, he chased and pursued her - sometimes a bit too enthusiastically - but I never thought of him as pathetic. I thought of him as cute, charming and chivalrous, a perfect antidote to some of the truly horrific men Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda had to date.

However, in the reboot, you can't help but feel deeply sad for Steve - and, even though it's 2022, that's just not what he deserves.
