‘I wasn't in the frame of mind to even do anything like that, and also, I felt like, do I just let her rest? Do I really need to talk about her? Should I just do this privately? But a lot of my relationship with her was so public. And I felt like there was a lot of stuff that wasn't actually made aware in the public eye that I felt should be seen.’

For the first time, Amy’s goddaughter Dionne Bromfield is speaking about her godmother, the late Amy Winehouse. On Monday, the singer will explore the impact the singer’s passing has had on her life - with a documentary, Amy Winehouse & Me: Dionne's Story, airing on MTV. As Dionne tells Grazia, the pair had a high-profile relationship - not only was Amy Dionne’s godmother, but also more of a mentor, Amy believed in Dionne’s voice so much that Dionne was the first person signed to her Lioness records in 2009. Amy supported Dionne as a backing singer for her first televised performance for Strictly Come Dancing, and Dionne performed with Amy at the Roundhouse in Camden only three days before she died.

Dionne, who was 15 when Amy died, hopes that the documentary will show viewers the side to Amy which was forgotten by the mainstream media at the time, who preferred to focus on her struggles with addiction. ‘There was another [positive] side of Amy that was always there,’ Dionne, now 25, tells Grazia. ‘I feel like a lot of people never saw that side just because it was never reported. That was the Amy all her family and friends knew. And so I think if you were lucky to experience that, you literally count yourself lucky. But I just thought it'd be really nice for people to really see how lovely and sweet and special she was.’

In the programme, Dionne meets with a group of people who have also lost people to addiction - where they all remember that people who suffer with addiction are more than their problems. She also tells Grazia that she didn’t feel the need to focus on the negative press attention Amy was getting while she was alive. ‘Every time I saw Amy, she was always on her best behaviour,' Dionne says. 'What I saw with my own two eyes, and what was in front of me, was greatness so I didn't really need to look at what the media was saying to depict how I should be portraying this Amy.’

For Dionne, she says she was fortunate enough to have Amy as part of her family - and that it was only a bonus how successful and famous she was. ‘I think everyone’s like “Oh my God, like, it’s brilliant you must have on here there and everywhere.” And yeah, that was part of it,’ she says. ‘But actually I'm just so lucky that I was able to have such a caring godmother. She was just very very supportive in anything that any of her friends or family did. And he has to be able to have like that much of a like massive musical mentor was just kind of the icing on the cake.’

But underneath it all, behind the iconic eyeliner and the beehive, Dionne says Amy was incredibly down-to-earth. ‘She was very normal person, Amy was very simple,’ she adds. ‘Everything around her was just extravagant and big. But like she was just a very simple girl that loved to do girly things. She loved to cook, and loved to throw her hair up and Hoover the house. That’s the Amy she was behind closed doors.’

And that's the legacy Dionne would like her to have. '[I want everyone to know] how funny she was, how talented she was, and just how normal she was. There will never be another Amy, and Amy was just authentically Amy,. And I think that's what made people like her so much. Because she wasn't trying to be something that she wasn't. And if you didn't like it, then that's your fault.'

Amy Winehouse and Me: Dionne’s Story airs on MTV UK Monday 26th July at 10pm.
