Not sure whether to laugh or cry

If you were put on the spot right now and asked to explain 2016, to have a go at summarising the events that took the world on a yearlong overwhelmingly emotional rollercoaster ride, I bet you’d struggle to respond with more than ‘erm...it’s been quite shit’.

It’s a difficult one to put into words, isn’t it? Which is completely understandable – so, so much has happened. Where would you even start?

Well, if you ever find yourself lost for words and in need of a quick reminder of why 2016 really hasn’t been the greatest of years, the guys over at Friend Dog Studios have transformed the events of the year into a two minute horror movie trailer. And it’s just as intense as you’d imagine.

As most scary movies go, the trailer starts with a New Year’s Eve 2015 party scene. Everyone looks pretty happy. Drinks are being drunk, laughs are being had and a girl mistakes her boyfriend’s video for a picture and poses for just a second too long before realising and giggling away at bae’s wily ways. Delightful.

And then it happens. ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR!’ they scream. It's started. It's now 2016 and there’s nothing they can do about it. Queue the deep dark bassy music with lots of suspense ridden long drawn out pauses.

‘It’s like things you’d never expect are happening everywhere’, one guy says. Sounds all too familiar, right?

There are references to Harambe, Trump, the passing of so many celebrities, exploding Samsung handsets and of course, Brexit - ‘England just left Europe’, one guy says. ‘Why?’ the other guy asks. ‘Nobody knows,’ the first guy responds, ‘They just, left’...

Credit where credit's due, the trailer is really bloody well done. Personally, it reminds me a bit of the Scary Movie films (remember those?!) which really isn't a bad thing. Terrifyingly close to home and comically ridiculous at times. We just can't work out whether to laugh or cry. I'm sure 2016 is the one film that we're not hoping for a sequel to.
