Steer clear of pub crawls and head to the best places your city has to offer

As Freshers weeks and fortnights take over the UK this month (and into next) going clubbing can be a fraught activity. If you’re a student and new to a location you’ve got to pick the best spots as an alternative to endless bar-crawls to places that will be so full and gross that you’ll never want to go to them ever again. If you are everyone else in the entire town or city, you’ll want to go somewhere that isn’t full of people enjoying their first sweet weeks of freedom. Here’s a mix of events that covers both bases.

La Cheetah Club x Offbeat present Levon Vincent @ La Cheetah Club, Glasgow

Fri 12 Sept

Glasgow venue La Cheetah Club turns five this year and so are putting on a three party birthday series starting on Friday and running until the 14th of November. Billed as 'some of our favourite acts on the planet' the first features New York house DJ Levon Vincent - someone they’ve been wanting to get to the venue for a while. Worth a visit before Scotland (maybe) declares independence?

Stay Gold Freshers Party w Karma Kid @ The Liquid Room, Edinburgh

Sat 13 Sept

It’s been a while since I was at University but if the ‘official’ parties are still a mess that inexplicably involves a) some kind of beach theme b) a bucking bronco c) a local DJ playing the Baywatch theme at least once. stay away and head nights from local promoters like Stay Gold. The appropriately university aged Annie Mac favourite, Karma Kid DJs on Saturday with ‘friends’ Young Cardinals, LALA and Turkish along for the night.

Eyes Down w Jon K @ Soup Kitchen, Manchester

Sat 13 Sept

If you’re new to Manchester, you’d do a lot worse than check out Eyes Down (which returns after hiatus). Local favourite Jon K (Hoya, of mixes like this) is back on-board for a night that historically took in all sorts from 'Ethiopian and Jazz records, through to hip-hop, house, reggae, post-punk, disco and industrial'. Basically - no rules, no one tempo, plenty of surprises and (even when there are guests) a focus on the great residence DJs aka the best no-pressure nights out you’ll ever have.

Dancetripp Summer Closing feat Bodhi @ Tripp, Southampton

Sat 13 Sept

Cardiff based duo Bodhi travel to the south coast of England for Dancetripp’s summer closing party (only a couple of weeks after everywhere else - the weather must be nicer down there). Expect new bassy dancefloor-ready music from the pair, plus Moda Soul and Jay Ahmed, in room one. In room two things are looking backwards with <<Rewind playing R&B and house.
