Congratulations! We’ve made it to the middle of January aka the point where you’ve realised that this isn’t the the time of year to try and overhaul your entire life. That time is April (maybe even May) where you can reinvent yourself as a juice glugging, kale caesar salad creating angel in Adidas Superstars and whatever skirt shape will be the most fashionable by then. Still, it can’t hurt to pick one change which is why this weekend we recommend trying the Nike Training Club, picking up a new art skill or boning up on your Oscar nominated films. Or maybe just go raving in Bognor Regis where you’ll survive on chicken nuggets, Pizza Hut and house shuffling. It’s up to you.

The only reason to go near Bognor Regis in January, ever

Bugged Out Weekender @ Butlins Bognor Regis

Fri Jan 16 - 18

Holiday camp based weekenders have taken a bit of a knock in recent years (for example the financial troubles that All Tomorrow’s Parties found itself in) but the Butlins based Bugged Out Weekender is still going with some of the worlds’ best DJs playing sets in glamorous Bognor Regis. Tickets are still available for chalets or the fancy hotel so get the train down, spend the daytime lying around watching Come Dine With Me repeats and the evenings dancing to Duke Dumont, Todd Terje (yes yes yes) Maya Jane Coles, Heidi, Leon Vynehall, Ben UFO, Four Tet, Moxie, Skream and more. Just don’t go to the breakfast buffet in the resort restaurant - the one The Debrief ate at the Bugged Out Weekender two years ago was one of the worst meals of all time.

The exhibition to visit when it’s too cold to have actual sex

*Researching Pornography @ The Institute of Sexology, Wellcome Collection *

Fri Jan 16

If you didn’t catch it at the end of last year, The Institute of Sexology at London’s Wellcome Collection is worth a look in 2015. An exploration of sex and the people who have investigated it from the late 19th century to right now it features art, archive material, film and photography, as well as special drop-in discussions on topics like Pornography (academics Feona Attwood and Clarissa Smith have worked on extensive porn research that wades through of the all the political outrage to find out why ‘ordinary’ people use it this weekend) and the way gender is constructed. A way to get your fix when it’s too cold in your house to have actual sex.

A v.cheap way to keep your all new fitness regime going way into January

*Nike Training Club @ Wherever You Are, The World *

Download in the app store

Your mates all use the Nike+ to show how much more they run than you but do they know about the Nike Training Club app that features 100+ workouts from specially appointed fitness experts and stars like Serena Williams? There are plenty that don’t use special kit (thought a medicine ball comes in handy for some) and if you want to take your fitness outside they

(https://www.nike.com/events-registration/series?id=1515&days=-1&cp=EUNS_OT_UknsmoukFBNTCUK1501_NTWEEK_CDP)) plus new, live guided workouts to stream on your phone so there’s no better time to download it.

The art workshop that will make you a hit with your friends

*Introduction to Screen Print @ The Bluecoat, Liverpool *

Sat Jan 17

One thing that January is great for is joining a new class at the start of term, whether it’s Pottery at Hackney City Farm or life drawing, or carpentry (adult education centres offer it) or say, screen printing. This introductory class at the Bluecoat in Liverpool will show you how to convert drawings, patterns or photos into stencils for printing onto different surfaces. Use your new found skills to print S/S 2014 t-shirts for friends or art for home.

The Oscar Nominated Films Out This Week

***Whiplash in cinemas from Jan 16 ***

*Wild in cinemas from Jan 16 *

Oh, Oscar season! Season of men shouting at each other while being very serious and maybe undergoing some kind of radical weight-loss or prosthetic in order to show their dedication to the craaaaft. Birdman with Michael Keaton and Ed Norton has a lot of shouting (but is brilliantly and v.knowingly funny), Foxcatcher even more (is very serious and harrowing) and drumming Whiplash is no exception with J.K Simmons giving Miles Teller’s young jazz drummer a good ear-bashing. If you want a break from all that, Reese Witherspoon tries to find spiritual and emotional calm and healing in ‘Wild’ an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s memoir of a 1995 hike along the US’ Pacific Crest Trail.

Or if you fancy something shorter…

London Short Film Festival @ The ICA, London

Fri Jan 16 - Sun 18

The 12th London Short Film Festival continues this weekend. Highlights including a series of six stories from the UK, Hungary, Poland, France and The Faroe Islands featuring young women coping with growing up.
