It's always at about this point in the summer when you've had a couple weeks of legit sunshine and have already exploited any and every opportunity to have a BBQ, had a picnic, developed an awkward sunburn on one side of your body and unsuccessfully played some sort of 'outdoor' game. So, you’re left wondering whether there’s actually anything else to do with your free time. And the answer is yes, my friends. There is. And we’ve made all the plans for you.

Friday 14 July

If you’re in search of a particularly rogue way to switch up your Friday night down the pub routine, make your way to the zoo kids. For a select few evenings throughout the summer Bristol Zoo is opening its gates for what it calls Friday Twilights. There’s live music on the lawn, exclusive talks, face painting and all sorts. Tickets are a fiver and you can find out all about it over on the website.
Saturday 15 July

Throwbacks can happen on a Saturday, don't you know? And they can also take the shape of an 80s-90s themed boat party. Yep, you heard. Inspired by the one and only George Michael, the guys at Foozie are putting on a day party like no other. On a boat. Tropical fancy dress will be happening, and yes, it’ll be as cheesy as it sounds. I hold my hands up and say that I could not survive a 12-hour party. But if you want to give it a go, there’s going to be an all-dayer down at The Plough Inn this Saturday. Hot Buttered Soul x Soulworks Bristol runs from 3 pm to 3 am the next day and promises to feature a hand-picked line-up of stellar DJs to keep you going. Entry is free, which is a bonus.

The Here. Gallery is exhibiting an amazing body of work by an illustrator called Harriet Lee Merrion at the moment. Her pieces are influenced by surrealism and Japanese woodblock prints, and on the first impressions given by the pictures on the website, she’s really, really talented. You’ve heard of Poetry Slam, so let me introduce you to Story Slam. Each month The Wardrobe Theatre hosts an afternoon of true stories told live on stage by volunteers from the audience. I know. It sounds terrifying but if you’re not up for baring your soul to a bunch of strangers, you’re welcome to sit back and listen to everyone else instead.
