Just because everyone's on that back to school vibe doesn't mean the weekends have to become boring again

It’s safe to say that we can properly kiss summer goodbye now. September has happened, autumn is upon us and the next thing to get legitimately excited about beyond Freshers’ is probably not going to be until Halloween.

But that’s no reason to sit around in your pants on a Netflix marathon all weekend (sometimes you just need a day though, don’t ya). Each week we round up some of the best things to do in a different city around the UK and this time around our eyes are on Birmingham. We’ve done the boring bit for you and found some super fun reasons for you to leave the house this weekend. Here’s what’s on the agenda.

Friday 8 September

By night

We’re all pretty familiar with the concept of a pop-up by now. But I don’t think I’ve come across a pop-up painting session before. Nevertheless, they’re a thing and the Banksy one in Birmingham this weekend sounds pretty cool. The idea is little more than having a drink, plonking yourself down with some paints and letting your creative juices flow as you recreate Banksy’s iconic Girl with the Balloon image. Book your tickets over on the event website.

Saturday 9 September

Attention runners: the Big Fun Run is in Birmingham this weekend and whether you fancy getting your jog on for charity, for fitness, or just to be part of the Fun, you there’s still time to get involved. It’s a 5K run for reference, so if you’re not a runner/have never trained before then maybe think carefully before you jump into it, but also all ages and abilities are welcome. Fancy dress is optional. If you’re up for it, head over to the website and register your interest.

There’s a brand spanking new event for all of you house music people out there. Brought to you by a selection of hand picked DJs, the District is holding its launch party at the Monastery on Saturday night. No faff or frills, just good old underground house and techno to vibe along to. More information over

Sunday is your last chance to check out the latest instalment of the Artist Rooms exhibition over at the MAC. Jenny Holzer’s work is in residency at the moment, and the artwork on show is particularly conceptual. Theme wise, the big guns are all in attendance: violence, power, war, sex and money. They all manifest in a variety of forms that include paintings, projection and LED work that Jenny has become particularly renowned for. Ready to be enlightened? Find out more over on the MAC Birmingham website.

Did you know it’s the 20th anniversary of Titanic this year? Twenty. Whole. Years. Which adds up to two decades. Once you’ve gotten passed how old that makes us all, there’s a free screening of the film at The Mockingbird Cinema & Kitchen. Take tissues and prepare to sing along to ‘My Heart Will Go On’.
