We’re approaching the time of the year when, beyond the growing panic about actually being able to afford Christmas presents, we’re slowly starting to remember that New Year’s Eve is actually on the horizon too. Yep. Yet another festive event we’re all grossly unprepared for.
There is, of course, the all too familiar internal battle you have with yourself about how engaged you’re prepared to be with this year’s New Year’s plans. At this stage of life, we like to think (pretend) we know better than to throw away a silly amount of ticket money at entry into a club that we know deep down is going to be astonishingly shit anyway. But at the same time, being all nonchalant and leaving celebratory agendas to the very last minute is super risky because, well, everyone else probably made plans.

Paris
Paris isn't just for Valentine's day, you guys. They've got a pretty incredible New Year's Eve set up what with the Eiffel Tower lighting up and that enormous street party on the Champs-Elysees. If the hangover's bearable on New Year's Day, get up and make your way sown to the big Grande Parade de Paris for a few extra hours of excitement. Secret Escapes have an offer on Hotel Balmoral which is ridiculously close to the Champs-Elysees for just £69* per person per night for minimum effort whenever you decide to call it a night.
Edinburgh
Just because this location is a little bit closer to home doesn't make it any less exciting, particularly if you haven't visited the great city yet. Have you heard of Hogmanay? It's a Scottish word for the last day of the year and manifests in a three day celebration to rival the best of them. If you just make it up there for the main event though, there's a street party, performance by Rag & Bone Man (ticketed, obvs) and all sorts. The festivities are a little pricey at £26 just for the street party bit – that's where the main fireworks will be – but to compensate you can split the £149* per night cost of this quaint little B&B that's a 15 minute walk away from the action.
Dubrovnik
If you're after something that feels big, but not too big, Dubrovnik is the destination you didn't see coming. Let's face it, all the cool kids have already ridden the Croatia holiday wave and that happened a little while ago back when it was still warm outside. Nevertheless, Dubrovnik's big public celebration is mainly channelled down Stradun with plenty of differing stop off points depending on what you fancy. Stay a little bit further out at the beach front Neputun Dubrovnik for £137* (ten-minute drive into down, don't worry) and when you finally arise after all of the activities, take a walk along the pretty coastline to knock the hangover out of you.
Reykjavik
Northern Lights, who now? The skies above Reykjavik look absolutely insane on NYE (they only have about four hours of day light at this time of year) and even though the city doesn't seem to have any centrally organised fireworks, there are shitloads put on by various individuals so you'll be hard pressed to find a patch of sky without streams of sparkly light bolting through it. May as well take that as an excuse to stay at this £193* per night (£96.5 each but even less if you manage to gather the 6 it sleeps) AirBnB on the periphery. Move quickly though, everyone wants a bit of Reykjavik at the moment, it seems.
Madeira
Introducing your New Year's Eve 2018 wildcard, ladies and gents. Word on the internet is that the Madeira's annual fireworks display in Funchal is really something to behold and what's more is that the weather should be just warm enough for you to leave the hat and gloves at home. The benefit of staying somewhere like Hotel Quinta da Serra (besides the fact that it's within budget at £132 and is one of the few remaining available hotels on the island) is that if you struggle for a nice picture of the fireworks, you've got it's millennial pink building to fall back on.
