Palazzo Zimara in Lecce

In one word- luxury. Lecce in Puglia is known as the ‘Florence of the South’ for its stunning baroque architecture and Palazzo Zimara, in the heart of the city, doesn’t disappoint. From the moment you walk into the newly-opened boutique hotel, you know you are somewhere special – the stunning reception has a towering stone-vaulted ceiling, filled with soft music. Through floor-to-ceiling windows you can see a lush, hidden garden.
Built in 1557, the palazzo is one of 40 protected mansions in the pedestrianised section of this amazing city. It has been restored to its former glory by the D’Angelo family, who bought the abandoned palazzo from the Italian Government five years ago, and have renovated it in spectacular style. They have kept many of the original details, but also made it perfect for a 21st-century stay.
The 18 suites are spacious and filled with light. Some are panelled and decorated with frescoes, with balconies and tubs perfectly placed for bathing with city views. Others feature sandstone walls and vaulted ceilings. All are decorated with artwork from the D’Angelo family’s personal collection.
You don’t have to go beyond the palazzo walls to eat and drink well. Enjoy a refreshing Aperol spritz among the orange trees in the peaceful courtyard or a glass of organic and biodynamic wine at the Radino bar. And eat the finest Italian dishes at La Bocca restaurant.
The finishing touch is the impeccable service. The staff are attentive and friendly, and their knowledge of Lecce and Puglia is second to none. Do take their recommendations for restaurants, local attractions and experiences.
