Today in grim news, a woman in Tennessee, USA has been charged with attempted murder – for trying to give herself an abortion.
Anna Yocca, 31, from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who works for Amazon, was arrested last week three months after she reportedly used a coat hanger to try and ‘self-abort’ her pregnancy in the bath.
When the bathtub began to fill with blood, Anna was reported to have become ‘alarmed and concerned for her safety’. Her boyfriend took her to the hospital where she delivered a 1.5 pound baby who will suffer from severe medical problems.
Apparently Anna, who was at 24 weeks, told members of staff at the hospital that she’d wanted to abort her child. Local police have condemned Anne’s actions. ‘The whole time she was concerned for her health, her safety and never gave any attention to the health and safety to the unborn child.’ Said Sergeant Kyle Evans from the Murfreesboro Police Department.
In June, Tennessee introduced strict new abortion laws that involved mandating a 48-hour waiting period after a woman requests an abortion before she can actually get one.
In addition to this, abortions after 12 weeks are banned with no exceptions made for the woman’s health. Those on low incomes can’tclaim financial assistance from the state to help with the cost of an abortion and it’s estimated that 59% of Tennesse women live in a county without an abortion clinic. The National Women’s Law Center give the state an ‘F’ in terms of providing for womens health and rank the state 44 out of 50 states. Nice work, Tennessee.
