This Woman Got A Hand Lift To Show Off Her Engagement Ring On Social Media

Yes, this is a new thing. And yes, it's depressing

Almost as if there wasn’t enough pressure for brides to perfect on their wedding day, there is apparently a brand new thing for them to feel neurotic about – how their hands look in the photos. In New York, women are so worried about the appearance of their mitts that they’re getting plastic surgery to improve their hands. It's even got a name - hand-lifts, according to Refinery 29.

‘I never liked how my hands looked,' Alexandra Berry admitted. 'I always thought my hands were a little boyish growing up so I figured why not. Engagement pictures are just around the corner and there’s no better time.’ So what does a ‘hand lift’ involve? According to Dr Ariel Ostad, a plastic surgeon: ‘What we’re doing today is basically using a filler called juvederm and it lasts nine months. What we want to achieve is a plump, smooth surface so we don’t see any of those underlining structures.’

Because, heaven forbid we’d have to see the way actual hands move, and see that hands are meant to do things rather than just look pretty. And, funny that while trim legs, arms and tummies are sold by surgeons, just like lips and bums and boobs, it seems a rounded form is more desired when it comes to hands, because women in pursuit of hand-lifts want their paws plumped to perfection. As another plastic surgeon, Dr Sydney Coleman put it he does hand surgery which involves taking fat from one part of the body 'concentrating it, refining it, then putting it into another part of your body'.

Eeesh. Let’s hope that this is a fad we can all wave (#sorrynotsorry) goodbye to sometime soon.
