If you’re partial to a few glasses of wine before bed (or in bed, no judgement here), then we have some news that might just make your weekend.

Research from scientists at Washington State University have found that the fruit in wine might actually help your body to burn calories.

To be specific, “berries, grapes and other fruits convert excess white fat into calorie-burning beige fat.”

The science behind the phenomenon is all down to resveratrol, an antioxidant found in fruit.

“In the study, mice were fed a high fat diet. Those receiving resveratrol in amounts equivalent to 12 ounces of fruit per day for humans gained about 40 percent less weight than control mice,” the report said.

However, unfortunately this doesn’t mean you can replace one of your five a day with wine. We thought this was too good to be true….

In fact pure fruit- especially berries such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries - are much more rich in resveratrol. You would therefore have to drink a tonne of wine to get the benefits, not necessarily ideal for your health.

And as your mother probably told you, moderation is key. Fruit salad, anyone?
