The UK’s smallest ‘castle’ could be yours for just over half a million pounds– a price similar to that of an average London flat with just one or two bedrooms.
Molly’s Lodge, a Grade II listed building found in the Cotswolds, is currently listed with Savills as accepting offers in the region of £550,000. The small but perfectly formed gate house sits in 0.61 acres of garden (including an ornamental pond), and has a connection to royalty, too: the Lodge was designed by Edward Blore, the Victorian architect who worked on Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
As Savills put it in the online property listing: ‘Molly’s Lodge is an attractive Grade II Listed former gate house to the Weston Park Estate. Dating to 1834, the property was designed by Edward Blore who is most notable for his completion of John Nash’s design of Buckingham Palace.’
While it might not be as palatial as the average royal residence, this particular ‘castle’ does boast traditional features like ‘polygonal corner turrets’ and an ‘embattled parapet,’ and is made from original coursed limestone. Inside, you’ll find a wrought iron spiral staircase and an old-fashioned fireplace; the grounds, meanwhile, have everything you need to live out the pastoral dream, from a chicken run and vegetable patches to an orchard filled with plum, pear and apple trees.
Included in the asking price is another one-bed annexe building, Molly’s Mews – all for the price of a shoebox flat in London. Never has a castle seemed like such a sensible and achievable investment…
