TV presenter Charlie Webster is in hospital in Rio with malaria – after a 3,000 mile bike ride through Brazil which saw her contract the disease.

The broadcaster – who has worked for ITV and Sky – had been updating fans on her journey through the country, which is currently hosting the Olympics.

However a team has now taken over Charlie’s Twitter account to update on her behalf as she’s now in intensive care in a coma.

A tweet from her account reads: 'On Saturday 6th August, Charlie became unwell and was admitted to hospital in Rio de Janeiro. What was initally thought as dehydration, caused by her riding to Rio, has since been diagnosed as a severe complication caused by a bacterial infection.

'Charlie is receiving great care and we will update when we can.

'#TeamCharlie.'

Earlier in the month the TV presenter had tweeted photos from hospital and written that she’d had an 'awful few days'.

The Sky News desk has confirmed that Charlie is seriously ill, with the news confirmed by her agent, tweeting: 'TV presenter #CharlieWebster's agent confirms she is being treated for a rare strain of malaria & is in a coma and on life support in #Rio'.

Charlie’s 3,000 mile bike ride went from the London Olympic stadium to Rio in memory of Jane Tomlinson, an English amateur athlete who raised £1.85 million for charity despite battling breast cancer.
