It’s increasingly difficult to engage young voters, a fact that’s not helped by awkward AF social media campaigns such as last week’s ‘workin, roamin, chattin, ravin’ video that went viral for all the wrong reasons, and the failure of the frankly insulting #VoteyMcVoteface.
Given the fact that millenials are the group most likely to vote to remain in Europe, but the least likely to register, Remain campaigners have a difficult problem on their hands.
Apparently we’re all too busy watching Netflix and swiping on Tinder to care about politics, but the dating app has now weighed in on the EU debate by introducing ‘Swipe The Vote’ in order to motivate everyone to actually use their chance to have a say in the referendum on the 23rd June.
Every few matches, users will see a screen that links out to a quiz about Britain’s relationship to Europe. The app presents statements about the EU such as 'Citizens of EU member countries have a guaranteed right to live, work or study in another EU member country'. Quiz-takers must decide if each sentence is true or false by swiping left or right before being given a score and a link to register to vote.
Tinder is partnering with Bite The Ballot, an organisation that encourages young people to vote, for this latest stunt.
Tinder founder and self-made Cupid Sean Rad told The Telegraph: ‘The political discourse on Tinder worldwide has reached historic levels. With 85 per cent of Tinder's users between the ages of 18-34, we want to do our part in educating and mobilizing our engaged audience on these types of issues, including the UK Referendum.’
Whether you’re in or out, it’s crucial that you register to vote by the 7th June.
