Police in Scotland have issued a warning following the death of a 19-year-old women from Glasgow, who died after taking drugs in her home on Sunday night. Detectives are saying it could be mephedrone or ketamine that caused her death. Helen Henderson, 19, became ill on Sunday night while at home in Renfrew, Glasgow.
Helen Henderson and fiancé Calum Smith were having a party when friends noticed their host was slumped in her bed and called paramedics. Shortly after being rushed to hospital, she died. Four other people in the house with her at the time have been admitted to hospital showing symptoms consistent with drug misuse. Police in Scotland have issued a warning, saying, ‘Extensive inquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the woman's death and, although unconfirmed, one of the lines of inquiry is that prior to her taking unwell she may have taken an illegal substance.’
‘Given that other people have also fallen ill and are currently in hospital, Police Scotland has taken the decision to issue a warning. At this time, it may be that the drug involved is MCAT. However, witnesses believe that the woman may have also taken ketamine.’
The Daily Express reports that police added, ‘Do not take illicit drugs and stay away from any unknown substances. No one can predict the risks involved or the serious consequences.’
Mephedrone was linked to 25 deaths in the UK in 2010, when it was a new, legal high. It is now a Class B drug. Glasgow has seen a recent spate of deaths following the sale of the Mortal Kombat pill – which is sold as an ecstasy pill containing MDMA, but which actually contains PMA (para-Methoxyamphetamin), which is said to be five times stronger than MDMA.
