A 19-year-old American teen accused of killing her mother in Bali reportedly laughed during her questioning by authorities in Nusa Dua.
Heather Mack, 19, and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 21, are accused of killing Sheila Von Wiese Mack, 62, at the St Regis Bali Resort and stuffing her body into a suitcase. They were seen putting the case into the trunk of a taxi before fleeing. After the cab driver waited an hour with the suitcase, he opened the trunk and noticed blood was dripping from it, so he took the case to the local police station where they discovered the body of Heather’s mum.
The pair were arrested at a hotel around six miles away and detained at a local police station, where it is reported Heather laughed as she was led between rooms. She apparently said, ‘Oh my god’ and joked, ‘Britney Spears’ when she noticed the volume of media present. Photographs of Heather in custody have been appearing on news websites internationally.
The teenager and her mother are said to have had an extremely volatile relationship ever since her father passed away in 2006. According to police in Chicago, where they both lived, a total of 86 domestic violence calls had been made to authorities and all related to incidents between the mother and daughter.
Friends of Mrs Von Wiese Mack say that they had advised her to kick her daughter out of the house as she had fallen in with a troublesome crowd and displayed wildly unpredictable behaviour.
‘She could be as charming and self-effacingly sweet one minute and then a vicious little monster the next,’ Mark Bacharach told NBC News.
Heather and Thomas refused to speak to police until lawyers were present. Heather has hired a Chiacgo-based lawyer to defend her in the case.
