Sweden’s largest union, Unionen, carried out a survey which found female workers felt like they were given unnecessary guidance from men who thought they knew better about a subject. Following this, Unionen have opened up a temporary hotline where people can ring and report ‘Mansplaining’, gain advice and learn how to resolve the issue.
**What is Mansplaining? **
Mansplaining is when a male patronises someone, typically a female, by explaining things to them they already know/may know more about. Still don't understand? Read This.
A studyby the American Psychological Association found that men "tend to overestimate their intelligence to a much greater extent than women" and showed that "self-assurance in men grows with age". It’s this self-assurance that apparently causes men to condescend colleagues and lecture them on topics they already know. People have shared their #mansplaining experiences on twitter…
It is hugely annoying to be told how to do things you already know – my dad constantly tries to lecture me on things such as how I should pluck my eyebrows (really), so to have somewhere to vent these problems and to raise awareness of it happening in the work place is surely a good thing, right?
However, people have taken to the
, commenting on how this is stereotyping men and a form of discrimination (srsly?). Unionen have stated that they know not all men do this and they’re simply trying to raise awareness – men are open to ring the hotline too.
