A totally awesome New York high school student has awesomely said she’d not going to fight her Christian school’s decision to bar her from taking her transgender boyfriend to her senior prom – because they’re just going to have their own celebration anyway. Take that Christian high school.
Anais Celini is a senior at Martin Luther High School in Queens and she claims she was told by administrators at the private school she attends that she couldn’t attend prom with her transgender boyfriend Nathaniel Baez, because the school viewed him as ‘unconventional’. Less awesome.
Anais says that the school doesn’t allow same sex couples to attend prom together, even though Nathaniel is transitioning. Speaking to *Buzzfeed she said: *‘We are no longer a same-sex couple. They need to see him as male and respect that. We didn’t want to sneak ourselves into prom, we wanted to be upfront and be respectful about it.’
Touchingly, Anais says that some teachers have shown their support but they’re afraid to come out publically on the matter because they’d risk upsetting the school administration.
The couple, who have been together for two years, have decided to do their own thing instead of fight the decision after the frustrating decision from her school. ‘I don’t plan on asking them again,’ Anais, explained. ‘I’m not going to fight them, that wasn’t the point. It’s a big night for everybody and I don’t want to cause a scene.’
Which sounds like a pretty thoughtful and grown-up decision from the high schooler doesn’t it? Shame the school didn't take their lead from her.
