If vaping is your thing it might be time to put down the e-cigarette as a new study shows they could be as bad for the heart as smoking cigarettes. A trial involving a group of adult smokers had their hearts monitored while they vaped, and then again when they used normal cigarettes.
The researchers from the University of athens Medical School measured the aortic stiffness, and discovered that it had a similar impact on the stiffness of the aorta, which is the main artery in the heart, as smoking one regular cigarette. If you’re sat there wondering what the aorta is, it’s like a balloon next to your heart, and the more stiff it is, the more difficult it is for your heart to pump.
Researchers described a 30-minute vaping session as similar to a five-minute normal cigarette session. And considering if you vape rather than smoke, say roll ups, you probably smoke a whole lot more, and for longer periods of time when vaping.
Public Health England endorsed vaping last year, making the claim that is was 95 per cent safer than smoking, and that GPs would soon be able to prescribe it to people trying to kick their smoking habit. The long term heart dangers from vaping are still unknown, but lead researcher Prof Charalambos Vlachopoulos stressed to The Telegraphthat they are far more dangerous than people realise. He went as far to say that he would not recommend them now as a method you give up smoking. With a massive 2.8 million adults in Great Britain alone using electronic cigarettes according to Action On Smoking And Health, isn’t it time we were more aware of the dangers of vaping?
