25 New Statues Of Women Are Coming To The UK – But There’s A Catch

Of the 925 public statues in the United Kingdom, just 158 (17 percent) are women. Fewer still – just 26 – show women who aren’t mythical characters (such as, for example, the allegorical figure of Lady Justice which sits atop of the Old Bailey) or royal. In fact, there are more statues of men called John, and more statues of goats, than there are of women who actually existed, but weren’t members of the royal family. Clearly, there’s a major gender imbalance at play here, and one that the Put Her Forward campaign has been seeking to redress.

Launched earlier this year by experiential art group Non Zero One in collaboration with the National Trust’s Heritage Open Days, the project aims to double the number of statues of non-mythical, non-royal women in the UK, by creating statues that ‘recognise living women who have done remarkable things to positively impact the people around them.’ The campaign has now won the support of MPs, and has today asked the public to nominate a living woman who they think deserves to have her own statue. Should said woman want to participate, she’ll then be 3D scanned and 3D printed to make a photo-real sandstone figure. Each of the 25 new statues will be unveiled across the country during the Heritage Open Days weekends, which will this year take place between 6th to 9th and 13th to 16th September.

The scheme is, of course, one to be lauded, but there’s just one (literally) tiny sticking point. The figures won’t be full scale models like the ones that tower in Parliament Square – they’ll actually be a little shorter than an Oscar statuette. Given that an Academy Award trophy measures about 34 centimetres, these new figures will probably be a similar size to the full-length ruler you used to cart around in your school pencil case, or a standard size magazine (such as, say, a copy of Grazia…) However, when the disparities are so glaring, any step forward is surely a positive one, and we'll be waiting with interest to see which inspiring women make the cut...

Just for reference purposes, here are some things that are the same size as the new statues...

'A feminist to me is somebody that wishes to protect the integrity of women who are ambitious. A feminist in my opinion is somebody that regards that women have a strong intelligence and wisdom. That we are just as great as men — and some of us can be even better.'

'You don't have to be pretty. You don't owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don't owe it to your mother, you don't owe it to you children, you don't owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked "female".'
