If you’ve spent most of your life pouring over your horoscope and investing in zodiac memorabilia (two words: Claire’s Accessories), you might want to sit down. Because what follows may shake your sense of identity to the very core.
According to astronomers, the night sky has changed in the 2,000 years since the signs of the zodiac were first established – and the constellations are about a month away from their original positions in the calendar. Taking this into account, NASA has now updated the astrological charts, which means that 86 percent of us having been living under the wrong horoscope. It’s like we don’t even know ourselves any more.
What’s the reasoning behind this cosmic upheaval? The gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon causes the Earth to ‘wobble,’ meaning that the constellations have drifted away from their original positions over time.
As if this wasn’t enough of a revelation, NASA has added in a thirteenth star sign. If your birthday falls between November 29 and December 17, you are now an Ophiuchus. Represented by a man holding a snake, it’s also known as ‘Serpentarius’ (which sounds just like a lesser member of the Malfoy family from a forthcoming Harry Potter spin-off). Initially discovered by the ancient astrologers who created the zodiac, it was done away with so that the 12 remaining signs could be neatly divided up into the sun’s 360 degree orbit.
If you’re a newly crowned Ophiuchus, you’re likely to be wise, rebellious and willing to fight for justice – so basically, you’d make an excellent lead character in a Young Adult film franchise.
