Unless you've switched off your news feeds entirely, it’s pretty hard to ignore the depressing headlines on the ongoing war to close the gender pay gap (new research established that it will take until 2041 to reach pay equality).
Insert angry face emoji here.
But, according to a new study carried out by Influencer, there is one career choice in particular that brings in the big bucks for women…a lot more than men.
Sky News first reported that ‘women in the UK have reportedly defeated the pay gap on social media, outperforming men by 35 per cent.’
Adding that a female influencer with 100,000 followers can in fact rake in up to £41,600 from TWO sponsored posts a week, whereas her male counterpart could earn approximately £31,200.
Ben Jeffries, the 21-year-old founder of web platform Influencer, said: ‘It’s no surprise that influential individuals on social media are monetising their social feeds – they have been doing so for some years now – but it is a surprise to see that female influencers are commanding higher fees than their male equivalent, flipping the traditional pay gap on its head.’
The gender pay gap is currently at almost 14 per cent in the UK, but this figure has been countered when it comes to women using their social media platforms as marketing tools.
The #1 reason behind the ever-increasing interest in #Instastars like Zoella and co? Researchers state that the increased popularity in fashion and lifestyle accounts - where women are leading the pack - is paramount. It makes sense. Women are far more likely to engage with #OOTD, make-up and food-related posts and, according to HopperHQ.com, 38 percent of women use Instagram in comparison to just 28 percent of men.
So there you have it. Do not underestimate the (money-making) power of social media.
