Snickers’ New Ad Tells Us Men Are All Sexist Idiots, Except When They’re Hungry

This Australian Snickers advert looks like it's empowering, ends up being really sexist

When you first see this Australian Snickers advert, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a shout-out to feminism. The ad features construction workers cat-calling women in the street, but instead of telling women how their bums look good, they’re shouting out things like, ‘Want to hear a filthy word? Gender bias,’ and, ‘I’d like to show you the respect you deserve.’ All good stuff, right? But then they go and ruin it all by saying (in capitals so you don’t miss the point), ‘YOU’RE NOT YOURSELF WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY.’ Oh. Very funny, Snickers. Nice one, etc.

Aside from playing on the assumption that builders and construction workers are all sexist idiots, it also implies that men can only be nice/not arseholes to women when they’re ‘not themselves’. Which is a) depressing if it were true; and b) not actually true.

Have a look at the video below and tell us what you think.
