Like it or not, Snapchat is absolutely The One right now. Instagram caught on to it and gave us Instagram Stories , Facebook trialled some Snapchatty features and models even wore filters as make up for a New York Fashion Week show.
Snapchat has consumed us all. It is part of life as we know it and we all seem to be pretty okay with it, right? Fab.
Because Snapchat are going one step further with this whole mass merging of social media with real actual life thing. Enter Spectacles. Yes, Spectacles.
Spectacles are a fancy new product that Snapchat have released. They’re basically super special sunglasses that have a camera built into them. But what makes them so fancy and special you ask? Well, the idea is that there is a teeny tiny camera on the glasses that can take a day’s worth of pictures on one charge that can be connected directly your Snapchat Memories.
If you’re interested in a pair, it’ll set you back about £100 so maybe one for the Christmas list. But, you can also record footage in ‘circular’ video. No, that doesn’t mean that your frames will spontaneously spin as you walk...
In a blog post on their website, the company explained that: ‘Circular video plays full screen on any device, in any orientation, and captures the human perspective with a 115-degree field of view’ which basically means that you won’t have to worry about those ugly black lines that appear either side of your video when you accidently record in portrait.
So, now that they’ve unveiled their first physical product, Snapchat thought it was high time to change their name too. No longer are they just an app. Oh no. Now they refer to themselves as a ‘camera company’.
Snapchat has dropped the chat and is now called Snap Inc. Before you rush to check your phone don’t worry, the app’s name will remain the same it’s just the wider company (which now sells specs) that has been re-named. Although I imagine it’ll make things a bit confusing for them in the future because if we’re being really honest with ourselves, we’ll have had enough with this Spectacle malarkey pretty soon and we’ll all just think of them as Snapchat glasses.
The question is though; will this be the end of the selfie as we know it? With no need to hold a phone, what are we meant to do with our phone holding hands when we take those obligatory toilet mirror selfies? Hands free has it's pros and cons, you guys. No one ever knows what to do with their hands in a photo.
