Snapchat is in deep water after an ex-employee claims he was fired three weeks into his contract for revealing information that the company was misleading investors by driving up their metrics.
Anthony Pompliano, who has been accused of being a whistleblower, previously worked at Facebook before Snapchat poached him to head up their new user growth and engagement team. He is suing the social media giant for ‘misrepresentation preventing a former employee from obtaining employment.’ The lawsuit also alleges that he was hired away from Facebook, so Snapchat could obtain confidential information about Facebook’s business.
So what exactly is going on here? According to Hollywood Reporter, during Pompliano’s three weeks within Snapchat, he learnt of misrepresentations of their growth, and informed executives to rectify these problems. Pompliano has claimed the company’s growth was falsely represented to him before his contract began, and that they were manipulating their growth numbers to lure investors.
Snapchat Inc have rejected the allegations and claims that they are ‘totally made up by a disgruntled former employee.’ The filings state that Pompliano was fired as he was ‘incompetent’ and ‘not adequately performing in his position.’ The now former employee is accusing the company of attempting to damage his reputation, and stop him finding suitable work after.
This isn’t the first time Snapchat has been sued. They came under fire back in June 2016 for exposing minors to sexual content in their Discover page, and by ousted co-founder, Reggie Brown, who claimed he came up for the idea of the disappearing photos and was ousted and was then not given equity. It would seem it’s not all clear skies for Snapchat this 2017.
