If a tree falls in the wood, and no-one sees it, did it really happen? Or more pertinently, if you go on holiday, and no-one sees the selfies, was there any point in going in the first place?
It’s just this sort of thinking that has spawned the latest trend for ‘selfie holidays,’ where taking a monstrously unflattering picture of yourself, arms outstretched, next to a 1,000-year-old monument isn’t just acceptable, it’s encouraged.
The Marriott Renaissance Hotel in San Juan, Puerto, is offering a Take a Selfie Adventure Package. Starting from $179 per night, the package ‘includes amazing [presumably very selfie friendly] extras, so you can explore San Juan, including discounts at the Bacardi Distillery, Tropical Rain Forrest Tour, and kite flying at the historical forts.’
Guests are then encouraged to post said selfies on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with a tag to win a prize.
Also getting in on the action is Kimpton’s Muse Hotel in New York, which gives guests props to carry out their own ‘selfie scavenger hunt’ in the city (including a list of 10 must-see attractions, of course). And if that sounds a bit too much like hard work, check out the 1888 Hotel in Sydney, which has dubbed itself the ‘world’s first Instagram hotel,’ including a dedicated space for selfie taking.
Of course, you might still be labouring under the horrendous misapprehension that holidays are for enjoying, not selfying, in which case, good luck to you. But what’s the point in enjoying all those beautiful beaches, snow-capped mountains and amazing famous monuments if you can’t passive-aggressively boast about it to 200 of your closest friends?
