The number of different conception methods are already slightly overwhelming (not that we're knocking having as much choice as possible when it comes to taking control of our contraceptive destinies). From the pill to the coil, the implant to the morning after pill – we’ve already got a number of different options to control our periods and - crucially - prevent pregnancy. But now there’s talk of a new one.
A group of public health researchers in India and Stanford University are currently developing an IUD that women will be able to inset and remove themselves. Yes, a self-inserted coil. Does this give anyone else the heebie jeebies because it makes me feel extremely nauseous and I don’t even have the coil.
The coil has a long flexible sleeve and a blue flange (anyone else thinking about phalange from Friends right now?) that makes the IUD stable. The device also has an extra long string that is visible in the cervix after insertion. They tested it on postpartum women with heath providers who had no experience of self-inserting IUDs and discovered it was both safe and might reduce the risk of infection. Crucially it could be a lifeline for women how don't have easy access to a regular healthcare provider.
One on hand, I can see the appeal, especially if you don't have access to a doctor. And IUD coils are increasingly popular, ask around your female friends and I can almost guarantee that a couple of them will have one, or will have tried one. I certainly know a handful who have recently taken the plunge after being recommended it by other friends, but are we all really ready to insert one ourselves? It sound like an overcomplicated, extremely painstaking tampon and the thought if inserting an IUD myself makes me want to curl up into a ball and stay there until the thing has been thrown away. But then again, I am a massive whip.
The device is currently not available to the public, but there’s no denying it will help those who don’t have easy access to licensed doctors, or those we are less squeamish than me.
