This weekend Saturday Night Live celebrated 40 years of being on air with a hilarious, side-splittingly epic three and a half hour show. Comedians both past and present remembered classic clips, famous faces took part in new sketches and there was more music than the Grammys… sort of. If you missed the show, fear not. Here are our top eight moments from the night.
1) Justin and Jimmy
We never say no to an audience with ol’ trousersnake Justin Timberlake himself and we thought Justin and Jimmy’s rap introduction to the show was just genius. The boys remembered some of the funniest moments over the past forty years – including their own ‘Dick in a box’ sketch. You can watch them perform here..
2) Maya as Queen Bey
Maya Rudolph does Beyonce better than Beyonce. Our favourite Bridesmaids star stormed the stage with renditions of Halo and Drunk In Love absolutely nailed being Queen Bey. Well played Maya.
3) Bradley and Betty’s kiss
She might be 93 years old but Betty White is still game for a laugh. In fact, Betty was quite happy to pucker up to Bradley Cooper during a sketch of 'The Californians'. Who can blame her? Here’s the skit but skip to 8.10 for the smooch.
4) Wayne’s World
Wayne and Garf returned to our screens to be generally excellent and to party on. We’ve missed them.
5) Eddie Murphy returns
He got his big break on SNL way back when and at the weekend Eddie Murphy made a return to the show for the first time in 30 years. Although we enjoyed Chris Rock’s tribute and Eddie received a standing ovation as he arrived on stage, he only managed to stay on stage for 73 seconds. He didn’t even crack a gag, not one, which left fans disappointed.
6) Miley Cyrus covered up
…To perform Paul Simon's '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover'. We never thought we’d see the day. Other musical treats came in the form of Paul Simon himself and Paul McCartney too. There’s also Kanye West but we’ll get to him in a minute.** **
7) Bieber
During a spoof game of Celebrity Jepordy Kate McKinnon pulled off Justin Bieber to a T. It was pure genius and one of the highlights of the show. Will Ferrell is also worth watching too.** **
8) Kanye West
We’re not quite sure why Kanye began lying down or why he had blue contacts in but he performed a mash up of multiple tracks Jesus Walks, Only One and Wolves on the show. You can see his creative genius flow as he performs, can't you? (Us neither)
