Sadiq Khan has been on a mission to make our lives better and, to be fair so far, he’s doing a pretty great job. Post one-hour ‘hopper’ bus ticket, getting tube up and running better than ever and launching toxic air warnings at London bus stops and tube stations, he’s still not done.
Khan has announced plans to launch a London Living Rent scheme, offering cheaper rent to lower and middle-income households.
Ideas are set in place for new build, affordable housing where rental costs will be decided based on a third of average household incomes in each borough. Due to the below-market rent, London renters will now have a better chance than ever to save for a deposit. So, households with an average income between £35,000 and £45,000 could be renting a two-bedroom London Living Rent flat for below £1,000. This is great considering that a private rental can be priced at around £1,450. £45,000 may seem like a lot of money, but remember that's per household so your earnings will be considered jointly.
Can this happen tomorrow, please?
Well, maybe not tomorrow, but excitingly, work has already begun. The mayor’s office has indicated Sadiq Khan has been in talks with housing associations and borough councils to set aside new homes in their building programmes to be let at these rent levels.
Phil Glanville, new mayor of Hackney, has pledged Hackney as the first borough to build 500 new homes for the London Living rent scheme.
