Magaluf, that by-word for all that is greasy, genital, gross and boozey about Brits abroad, is now home to a brand new drug trend. No, it’s not something like bath salts, anally-inserted ketamine or MDMA nosebags. It’s actually a drug you hopefully won’t have heard of – Zithromax.

Far from any hallucinogen that makes you feel like all your skin is fairydust or you’re walking on water (so we've heard), Zithromax is an antibiotic normally prescribed by doctors to treat STIs like gonorrhea and chlamydia. The boys – and it is mostly boys – taking it are using it as a prophylactic (preventative medication) that gives them a free pass to go out on the lash and knob as many women as possible – unprotected – without fear of catching anything.

The pills, which are £4 for three on the Spanish black market, don’t actually prevent against viral transmissions. So unprotected sex could still result in herpes, hepatitis B, genital warts and HIV. A 19-year-old holiday rep called Paul told The Sun: ‘It’s the new big holiday drug this year.

He added, for the lols, we guess: ‘Sometimes we reps will get through two or three holidaymakers a day or even at a time.’

Ahem. Another rep, 21-year-old Gary, said: ‘I suppose it’s like a girl taking the contraceptive pill.’

We think it might be a little different to the contraceptive pill.

You do kind of wonder why they don’t just wear a condom or three, needs willing. Well, the consensus is that men don’t want to wear condoms – 80 per cent of men say they don’t want to use them, according to The Journal of Sex Research.
