A couple from Peterborough have been telling their proposal horror story after losing an engagement ring down a drain in New York’s Times Square.
It all started off well. The couple – John and Daniella – flew to New York to celebrate 10 years of dating, and John had planned to propose while on the trip.
Having thought long and hard about how and when to pop the question, and having carried the ring around in his pocket for days, John decided to ask Daniella to marry him in Central Park.
‘The time was right. There were autumn leaves everywhere and not many people,’ John told the BBC.
Daniella said yes, but the ring was too big for her, something she made clear to new fiancé John. ‘I tried to tell John it was too big, but he insisted I wear it,’ she said.
‘I told her it was fine. I was just so happy to finally call her my fiancée after all this time,’ added John.
Well, Daniella was right to be cautious, as the ring slipped off as they walked back to their hotel after seeing the Christmas Spectacular in Times Square.
The newly-engaged couple called the police, who quickly opened the grate with a crow bar, looked underneath with torches, but couldn’t find it.

‘We just presumed it was gone,’ John told the BBC. ‘In the end, we had no choice but to walk away and try to enjoy the rest of our weekend.’ And they did just that, leaving without giving their names or details to the police officers.
So they must’ve been quite surprised when they arrived back home and a friend told them that the NYPD had posted a video of them on Twitter, along with the news that they had found the ring.
Well, that’s the wedding speech sorted!
