The release of the most popular baby names are the year are greeted with both dread (popular = common) and joy (while no one on the Grazia Daily desk is remotely close to being up the duff, we are all mildly obsessed with baby names). This year’s winners (or losers, depending on how you view it) according to BabyCenter are Jackson and Sophia, the most popular baby names of the year in the U.S.

While the top 10 names on both lists are reflective of recent trends towards biblical for boys (Noah, Jacob) and classic Hollywood for girls (Ava, Isabella), some of the other names which have experienced heavy spikes include popular characters in recent Netflix series. A telling reflection of the current Zeitgeist (living for the box-set binge) Piper and Galina, names from Orange is the New Black were up 67% and 28% respectively while Frank and Claire the two main protagonists from House of Cards were also both up by 19% and 14%.

However, we decided that many of the names on the list insufficiently reflect the most directional of fashion trends so we have put together our own list of baby names to rectify the situation.
