Oscar Pistorius, the paralympian convicted of manslaughter for the shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steemkamp, has been released from prison a day early to serve the rest of his five-year sentence under house arrest.
The South African athlete has four years of his sentence remaining, but will face an appeal by prosecutors on 3 November who argue that he should have been convicted of murder, rather than culpable homicide. Whether he intented to shoot his girlfriend through the bathroom door, or whether he believed she was an intruder, was a point fiercely battled in the courts back in 2013.
Released yesterday, he was actually supposed to leave today. Pistorius is now at his uncle's home in a wealthy suburb of Pretoria.
Reeva Steenkamp’s family have voiced concerns about the sentence in the past, with her mother saying: ‘He killed her. He admits he killed her,’ and her husband adding: ‘What actually came out in court is not the truth. We know what we heard there is not right.’
