Is This Official Proof That Hipsters Have Gone Mainstream?

Sorry, Hipsters, It Looks Like You're Going Mainstream

It’s official - hipsters are taking over the world.

Just when we thought we’d come to terms with replacing our Beyonce CDs with old vinyls and ordering burgers on wooden boards (what was so offensive about plates, anyway?) the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has announced that it’s introducing ‘hipster’ items into the typical British shopping basket.

So what is this basket?

Similar to the international Big Mac price index, it’s a list of the average price of household items, which we can then use to figure out how the economy is doing.

Common items include the cost of bread, a pack of biscuits and a bag of dry pasta.

The list for 2017 has just come out, and based on what we’re all buying, our staple items have made some changes.

Bike helmets, non dairy milk alternatives and gin have all been added to our standard British basket of goods.

Based on the rise of clean eating (maybe not so much the gin…) and going back to nostalgic memories like cycling instead of driving or walking, the ONS has revealed (with perhaps a hint of sarcasm) that a hipster household is the way forward.

And what’s on the way out?

Menthol cigarettes, cheque fees and basic mobile phone handsets.

The ONS says the rise of charities like Veganuary has led to an increase in healthier alternatives to cow’s milk, and artisan gin festivals have refreshed the drink as a popular choice for young people.

Other things included in this year’s list are flavoured cider, half chocolate-coated biscuits and adult jigsaws.
