It's been a big year for periods. From Donald Trump being called out for his dickhead comments, to this women who free-bled through a marathon, to the whole tampon tax debate, our time of the month has dominated headlines like never before.
And now, in unexpected, but awesome news, a Huddersfield nightclub has decorated its Christmas tree with tampons. Yep, Camel Club created the wonderfully-titled 'Sani-Tree' in order to destroy the stigma around periods. Decorated with tampons removed from their packaging, the tree sits alongside the slogan 'helping you with your festive period'.
Apparently the tree has sparked debate, with some saying the tree was 'sexist' and 'degrading' - but the University of Huddersfield's feminist society have applauded the club for their actions.
Drama graduate Bethany Givvons-Collinge, said: 'As a feminist, I personally love the idea of this. Far from being sexist or degrading, I feel this festive pun actually helps to normalise periods and remove some of the stigma attached to them.'
She added: 'I’ve been made to feel embarrassed and, to some degree, ashamed of my period, smuggling sanitary products to school toilets or feeling awkward when buying them from a male cashier...By portraying periods in this light-hearted manner, the harmless word-play of Camel Club’s ‘Sani-Tree’ actually works towards normalising menstruation and dismantling the negativity associated with periods.'
