Amidst post-Brexit brooding and uncertainty over the future state of the UK economy, there have been countless articles/questions about the fate of the British passport. So what will become of our little burgundy books?

In Britain, passports are redesigned every 5 years as it is, much like the latest pound coin, for security reasons. The current red signifies that we are part of the European Union, so upon our withdrawal, there are rumours that we will return to the patriotic blue of the past, the first of which was printed in 1920. But one online art magazine has made things interesting, coming up with their own solution to the problem.

Design magazine 'Dezeen' have launched a Brexit passport design competition and the shortlist has just been revealed. There are 9 proposals, by an exceptionally varied range of contributors, containing everything from a minimalist, iridescent sky-blue to a more tongue-in-cheek design featuring the acronym ‘FUK-U’, to the more global approach of listing every single country in the world front-to-back, with the United Kingdom highlighted in red.

The youngest entrant was just 12 years old and the oldest was retired, with submissions coming from Norway, Greece, Holland, the UK and many others.
